Mara Javines

Student at Lake Tahoe Community College

Fresh out of high school, Mara had no idea what to expect applying to community college. As a low income first generation college student, she was not provided a lot of help applying for financial aid. She became so frustrated with the complexity of the process that she decided to abandon the application and pay full tuition. Later, Mara learned that if she had finished her application she would have qualified for financial assistance.  She hopes that no other students will have to through what she went through – this is why she is fighting to ensure students have a simple and demystified financial aid process.
