Gary K. Hart (Vice Chair)

Former Secretary of Education

Gary K. Hart has served as a Campaign for College Opportunity board member since 2009. He is a former California legislator and California Secretary for Education and was founder and director of the California State University Institute for Education Reform. He played a leadership role in the creation of legislation relevant to the work of the Campaign for College Opportunity including the California Scholarshare Program, the APLE (the Assumption Program of Loans for Education) and the Community College Transfer Agreement Act. He also helped establish state funding for AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). A California public school graduate, Hart has a B. A. from Stanford and a Masters in Teaching from Harvard and has done graduate work in history at UCSB and UC Davis
