Statement on UC Regents Proposal to Increase Tuition

There is no question that the UC system needs additional financial support and we strongly urge the legislature and Governor to make that funding available.

With additional funds from the state, the UC should focus first on making more classroom seats available to Californians especially since the number of out-of-state students already account for a third of freshman at UCLA and UC Berkeley and make up 22% of freshman across the UC system.

There are other measures that the UC system can and should implement immediately to strengthen public support, keep UC costs down, make going to college in California more affordable and increase the likelihood that students will complete their studies on time and actually graduate.
