Equity Exemplar: How Palo Verde College Is Advancing Campuswide Success in Transfer-Level Math

California’s landmark equitable placement policies, including AB 705 and AB 1705, have expanded access to transfer-level coursework by removing unnecessary remedial barriers. By advancing campuswide success in transfer-level math, Palo Verde College has advanced this mission by ensuring more students enroll and succeed in transfer-level math within their first year.

Palo Verde College demonstrates how colleges can build on California’s equitable placement policies to expand student opportunity and improve outcomes. Its growth in transfer-level math completion rates reflects the impact of intentional efforts to help more students succeed. In the 2024–25 academic year, the college achieved a 51% success rate in transfer-level math, 19 percentage points higher than in the 2023–24 academic year. Located in eastern Riverside County and more than 150 miles from the nearest public four-year university, Palo Verde College is an example of meeting barriers with opportunities.
