Equity Exemplar: How Lake Tahoe Community College Is Advancing Latinx Student Success in Transfer-Level Math

California’s landmark equitable placement policies, including AB 705 and AB 1705, have expanded access to transfer-level coursework by removing unnecessary remedial barriers. Yet racial equity gaps in course completion persist statewide. In the 2024–25 academic year, 64% of California community college students successfully completed transfer-level math, compared with 57% of Latinx students. Lake Tahoe Community College demonstrates what is possible when equitable placement is paired with culturally responsive instruction and holistic support: 83% of all students and 83% of Latinx students successfully completed transfer-level math—outperforming the corresponding statewide rates by 19 and 26 percentage points, respectively, with no equity gap between Latinx students and the college’s overall student population. This success reflects a campuswide commitment to data-informed continuous improvement, supported by its year-long Cultural Fluency Teaching Academy, accessible bilingual peer tutoring, flexible scheduling, humanistic teaching, and equitable grading practices. By combining culturally responsive pedagogy, strong student relationships, and coordinated academic support, Lake Tahoe Community College offers a compelling model for advancing equity, belonging, and success in transfer-level math.
