“Higher education does not change lives on its own. People, policies, and systems do.” My commitment to this work is grounded in ensuring that students not only access higher education, but are supported to persist and thrive within it. My perspective has been shaped through mentorship during my time as a Fellow to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at UC Davis, where I worked under Vice Chancellor Pablo G. Reguerín. His leadership reinforced my commitment to investing in students through real, meaningful relationships and by advancing the systems that influence their success. That foundation continues to guide my work across advising, advocacy, and research.

Sergio Maciel is a higher education professional dedicated to supporting student success. A proud graduate of UC Davis, he earned degrees in Economics and Political Science – Public Service. As an undergraduate, he served as the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Fellow at UC Davis, collaborating with campus leadership to advance student life, belonging, well-being, academic and retention resources, and the systems and staff that sustain the student experience. He later worked with the UC Office of the President’s State Governmental Relations team, gaining experience in higher education policy and advocacy.

Today, Sergio serves as a College Corps Advisor, helping students turn their service experiences into personal and professional growth. He also serves as Co-Chair of the UC Chicanx Latinx Alumni Association Legislative Committee, where he helps direct the organization’s advocacy efforts at the state and systemwide levels.
